Empowerment through Afro-diasporic dance

Workshop with Bárbara Luci Carvalho & Amelia Uzategui

Workshop for BIPOC womxn* (Black, Indigenous, People of Color)

Movement and especially dance has always been helpful in the context of the diaspora to feel one’s own identity and grounding. This is reflected, among other things, in the Afro-Brazilian culture in which dance educator and choreographer Bárbara grew up.  Dancer and educator Amelia will convey concepts such as that of hybrid identity through Afro-Peruvian movements, enriching the workshop with the multiple aspects of the diasporic body.  Accompanied by the rhythm of the drums, you will discover the awareness and empowerment of your bodies with the two of them. In the process you can experience images and movements of Afro-diasporic symbolism and its history.

Bárbara Luci Carvalho is a dancer, actress and lecturer for theater and dance. She has been working in Frankfurt am Main since 2010 and is part of the collective antagon TheaterAKTion. Previously, she studied theater education at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) in Brazil. She is currently studying in the M.A. Choreography and Performance at the Institute of Applied Theatre Studies at Justus Liebig University Gießen in Hessen, Germany. She has been the artistic director of the IFTF since 2017.
