The Afro-diasporic Body

Workshop with Bárbara Luci Carvalho

In this workshop the perception and empowerment of the body can be discovered with the rhythm of the drums. Images and movements of Afro-Brazilian symbolism and its history can be experienced. Movement and especially dance has always been helpful in the context of the diaspora to feel one’s own identity and grounding. This is reflected, among other things, in the Brazilian culture in which dance educator and choreographer Bárbara grew up.

Bárbara Luci Carvalho is a dancer, actress and lecturer for theatre and dance. She has been working in Frankfurt am Main since 2010 and is part of the collective antagon TheaterAKTion. Previously, she studied theatre education at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) in Brazil. She is currently studying in the M.A. Choreography and Performance at the Institute of Applied Theatre Studies at Justus Liebig University Gießen in Hessen, Germany. She has been the artistic director of the IFTF since 2017.
