International Women‘s* Theatre Festival

Tony Sender Prize

IF*TF Artistic Director Bárbara Luci Carvalho has received the City of Frankfurt’s Tony Sender Prize in recognition of her powerful feminist work in theatre. Through her unwavering commitment to feminist perspectives, anti-racist practice, and artistic empowerment, she has actively reshaped Frankfurt’s cultural landscape—amplifying the voices and visibility of womxn, BIPoC, and queer artists from around the world.

We also extend our warm congratulations to Anne Breick, who received the award alongside her.

Awarded every two years since 1992, the Tony Sender Prize honors women whose work has made a lasting and outstanding contribution to the advancement of women in the arts and in the Frankfurt community. Announcing this year’s prize, the jury stated:

“Bárbara Luci Carvalho is committed to gender equality in the cultural sector and to building an international network of artists. In addition, she is tirelessly committed to the social participation and visibility of women, especially women of color. Her work is based on her personal experiences as an Afro-Brazilian artist and Black woman in a white, Eurocentric society. She is a powerful advocate of intersectional feminism – both in culture and education in Frankfurt and internationally.”
